A $2,500 budget means very different things depending on what it needs to cover. Is it your budget for the vehicle itself? The vehicle prepared for export from Japan? Or the complete cost of getting a truck to your home in the United States?
Before choosing a kei truck, separate the vehicle price from kei truck shipping costs, import charges and destination costs. A truck within your purchase budget may still exceed your total budget once those are included. Ask us which costs are included in a quote and which you need to budget separately.
Can you buy a kei truck for $1,500–$2,500?
If this is your target vehicle budget, send us your requirements and we can assess what is realistic. We do not promise that a particular price will buy a low-mileage, air-conditioned, four-wheel-drive truck in good condition. Useful questions for a limited budget:
- Are you comfortable with higher mileage?
- Is air conditioning essential?
- Do you need four-wheel drive, or would two-wheel drive suit your use?
- Is cosmetic wear acceptable?
- Are you flexible about the manufacturer and model?
- Would you rather wait for a suitable vehicle than compromise on condition?
Higher-mileage trucks or trucks without air conditioning may be worth considering. These are options to discuss, not a guarantee that dropping a feature will bring a particular truck within budget. Our approach is to agree on what matters most, explain the condition of an actual vehicle, and give you a clear quote.

What does the total import cost include?
For a US buyer, build your kei truck import cost budget around these categories.
| Cost category | What to establish before buying |
|---|---|
| Vehicle | The agreed selling price and exactly what preparation it includes. |
| Japan-side handling | Whether inland transport, export paperwork and port handling are included or additional. |
| Ocean freight | A quote for the specific vehicle, destination port and shipping arrangement. |
| Marine insurance | Whether cover is included, optional or arranged separately. |
| US customs | Applicable duty, tariffs, entry fees and customs-broker charges. |
| Destination port | Handling, release, storage and other applicable charges. |
| Collection or delivery | How the truck gets from the port to you. |
| Registration and ownership | State requirements, insurance, inspections and initial maintenance. |
Use this as a quote checklist rather than assuming every seller packages these costs the same way. Ask for a written breakdown showing which charges are included, which are estimates, and which are paid to other companies.
For a rough number, try our landed cost calculator. Its results are planning estimates, not a binding quote.
What does FOB Japan mean?
FOB is a formal Incoterms shipping term, and a price quoted FOB Japan is not a delivered price. When comparing quotes described as FOB, ask the seller or freight agent to confirm the named port, the Incoterms rule and version that applies, and every charge included.
Ask separately about ocean freight, insurance, destination customs clearance, port charges and onward delivery. The most useful comparison is not two headline prices. It is two written quotes with the same scope.
Does a kei truck need to be 25 years old for US import?
For the standard age-based exemption from US federal motor vehicle safety standards, a vehicle must be at least 25 years old. NHTSA's importation and certification FAQs explain that this runs from the date of manufacture, not the advertised model year, and that such vehicles are declared under Box 1 of the HS-7 form. Before purchasing, confirm there is acceptable evidence of age and that the truck will qualify when it enters the United States.
EPA emissions requirements are separate. Its age-based exemption generally concerns vehicles at least 21 years old in their original, unmodified configuration; replacement engines and modifications need particular care. See EPA's guidance on importing vehicles and engines, and have the importer or customs broker confirm the applicable EPA declaration and evidence.
To check a specific vehicle's age, see Can I import it?
Does federal import eligibility mean I can register it?
No. Federal import eligibility and state road registration are separate questions. Before buying a truck for public-road use, get confirmation from your state or local registration authority for the exact vehicle and intended use, ideally in writing.
Tell your supplier whether the truck is for road use, a farm, private property or resale. Do not assume another owner's registration experience will apply where you live. Our guide Are kei trucks street legal? covers how to approach this.
How much is US import duty on a kei truck?
Import charges need to be checked for the specific vehicle and shipment. CBP's vehicle-import guidance distinguishes trucks from passenger cars, but a general rate on an information page is not a shipment-specific tax quote, and rates have changed several times recently.
Ask your customs broker to confirm the vehicle's classification, current duties and tariffs, fees and customs value before you buy. Being old enough for an age-based safety exemption does not make a vehicle duty-free.
Should you choose the lowest-mileage truck?
Mileage should be part of your decision, not the whole decision. Ask:
- What does the underbody look like?
- What condition issues have been identified?
- What servicing or repairs have been completed?
- Does the equipment you need work?
- What remains imperfect?
- What evidence supports the mileage description?
A mileage figure alone cannot answer those questions. Ask for condition notes, photographs and video. Our team inspects vehicles at our own yard in Aichi and explains the condition and preparation of the vehicle being offered. These are older used vehicles: inspection reduces surprises but does not remove every risk, and preparation is not a promise of new-car condition.
How buying through Circle Kei works
1. Tell us what you need
Send your destination, preferred vehicle, specifications and budget. Say whether the budget is vehicle-only or meant to cover the complete import.
2. Review the vehicle and quote
Review the photographs, video, condition information and written quote. Confirm what is included and which costs remain separate before proceeding.
3. Agree on purchase and export arrangements
We explain the Japan-side purchase and export steps for your order. You import in your own name, so before committing, establish who handles destination customs clearance, collection and registration. The full process is on How It Works.
What to send us for a realistic quote
- Destination country, state and preferred port.
- Preferred model, or whether you are open to alternatives.
- Manual or automatic preference.
- Whether four-wheel drive is essential.
- Whether air conditioning is essential.
- Your acceptable mileage and condition range.
- Vehicle budget and total import budget.
- Intended use and preferred timing.
If your budget is $2,500, say exactly what that amount needs to cover. We can then discuss whether your requirements need adjusting before you spend money.
